Research
After directed research on Laser weaponry a design team
started work on a pistol following these principles.
Research of Finalised Laser Pistol design was handed over for
mass manufacture as of 00:09 8th Jan 1999 (GMT)
Prototype Laser Pistol delivered greater power and accuracy than
standard pistol.
We are awaiting field trials of the new weapon.
The design of a larger Rifle weapon using the principles of
Laser weaponry has begun.
Manufacturing
10 engineers have begun construction of the new laser pistol
weapon. An initial order of 28 has been placed although we have
been informed that this may be interrupted before completion.
Summary Report of Laser Pistol Project.
Command are pleased with the laser pistol project which should
give valuable increased power and accuracy to our troops. A big
advantage of these weapons is the high capacity power cell which
seems capable of sustaining the weapon over a huge duration.
Although the laser pistol may be superseded quite rapidly in the
XCOM armoury (By the laser rifle) we expect there to be high
commercial interest in both the pistol and rifle versions, which
could bring in valuable extra funding and at the very least pay
the wages of our engineers if they have no more pressing task to
perform.

Research report
20th January
The design of the laser rifle has been completed and forwarded to
the engineering team.
We can see potential for a larger weapon along a similar theme
but research into the newly retrieved alien technology has been
given priority.
We have begun research into what appears to be a weapon. From
reports from the troops and salvage teams we so far believe this
to be one of the more powerful hand weapons, found only rarely
among the aliens.

The craft was a small box shaped vehicle formed from a silvery
alloy.
Inside we discovered a large column, still pulsing. We assumed
this to be some form of power source, whatever it was it was
still active. We left it well alone leaving it to the salvage
teams.
The ship itself was full of corridors, only one hostile was
guarding it.

Sergeant Carter was hit by an alien energy weapon. After a
thorough medical examination he seems completely unharmed. This
weapon may have unseen side effects I am therefore keeping him
under observation although there are no constraints on active
service.
My conclusion so far is that it was merely a glancing shot.

Scientific Note:
My team has given the items recovered from this mission a cursory
examination and we conclude that the smaller pistol shaped item
is very similar in design and usage to the larger bore weapons.
Although we would like to keep at least one example of each
artefact I suggest transfer of the lighter weapons to other
research establishments.

From this report I have decided that we will keep all of the
larger weapons but the smaller pistol weapons will be sold on to
interested parties, along with excess alien corpses. This will
not only lighten the load on our stores but will provide us with
much needed funds to combat the alien threat.

route to Novosibirsk)
XCOM have monitored an emergency distress signal from the Russian
town of Novosibirsk.
From what we can tell the armed forces have cordoned off an area
of the city in the southern suburbs. A large craft delivered
alien forces to the area and despite evacuation there are still
some civilians in the area. Russian forces are reluctant to enter
the blockaded area.
Reports of grey creatures (we assume they are the same creatures
from your previous recovery mission) alongside a larger hovering
tank.

We set down in a covered area but came under fire very quickly
after leaving the ranger.
Hudson took out of them covering the 'rangers door which let the
rest of us move out into covering positions around two
warehouses.
There were a number of civilians in that area, I sent Crusher and
Jonlan up north to cover the outside of a three story apartment
block. Hudson and I moved along the edge of a warehouse to the
main street. Another two man team was sent south to secure the
warehouse near us.
The rest of the troops deployed into our secured zone.
We were expecting the small grey guys to be around but these
reports of tanks scared me. The heaviest weapon we had was
Crusher's Auto cannon.
These flying tanks are a nightmare to fight, our rifle's don't do
a lot against them, fortunately these laser pistols do seem to
give them pause for thought. We were lucky, the first one we
killed was a long distance off, it exploded taking out an entire
park, and another alien. That blast radius is huge.. something
like a High Explosive. There were four of those, when we'd left..
well the combat area looked like it had been bombed from the air.

Report from Mission commander Wil Carter
The Skyranger put down close to the alien craft with the rear
doors covered by two surrounding buildings.
Ellen Black left the craft moving to the closest building and
gave the surrounding area a visual sweep. Black moved towards a
nearby barn and advanced to the door. Stopping just short.
Black called in a hostiles position and requested covering fire.
I'm still impressed by the cool of some of my troops, these are
some of the very best I've worked with.
Sergeant Jonlan lay down fire to increase visibility and allow
easier shots to the hostile. Jarvis followed up with a killing
the hostile.
Jarvis then moved out to cover the forward section of the
Skyranger.
I ordered Hudson to advance to building recently occupied by
hostile in order to provide a clear firing point to surrounding
terrain and to facilitate the evacuation of the ranger.
Hudson was hit by plasma shot originating from the facing
building and was severely wounded.
It was at this point that I gave the order to retreat. I called
Crusher forward to lay down suppressive fire in order to pin down
the hostile that wounded Hudson, she lay down fire in the area
and resulted in killing the hostile.
Apone left the ranger to help Hudson home as Hudson collapsed
unconscious, Sergeant Apone dragged him back to the ranger.
Jonlan grabbed Hudson's laser rifle on her retreat to the ranger,
we left the grenades there as they are standard military grenades
unlike the more sensitive (and highly secret) laser rifle.
As Black moved back towards the ranger she noticed movement in
the building that Crusher had been firing on, in one swift
movement she dropped to one knee and fired through the building
killing one hostile. Black then retreated back to the ranger and
we dusted off.

Personnel Report
It is my sad duty to report that Ellen Black and Susan Crusher
were killed defending their planet.
Their deaths remind us all that we are at war.
Today has seen a severe wound and two deaths, the first
casualties of this war.
Looking back at our previous impeccable mission record it's easy
to believe that we had become overconfident. This must never
happen. We must never forget that we are facing a totally unknown
threat with the potential to destroy us all and today's events
have brought that point home very strongly indeed.

Heavy Plasma Research Completed
This weapon appears to be an incredibly powerful plasma
emitter, it is an extremely efficient weapon. Unfortunately the
power source required to use such a weapon would be roughly the
size of a small house.
However field reports show that this weapon is always found
loaded with a small alien power source, we have begun research
into this device.
13th February
Heavy Plasma Clip research Completed
This small, but remarkable device produces enough energy to
power the heavy plasma weapon. We are as yet unsure of the means
of power generation but have determined the design
specifications. Manufacture of this device is possible, and
blueprints have been drawn up and transferred to Mr. Robson of
the engineering department however we recommend against using our
valuable supplies of the unknown element required as it becomes
fully integrated into the clip and cannot be deconstructed again.
we have begun research into a much larger weapon to see if the
directional focussed plasma beam technology can be applied on a
larger scale.

The XCOM project was initially sanctioned as a collaborative
research project to investigate the Alien threat to this world.
Our most important discovery so far is that they are hostile. It
is covert, but it is nevertheless a war and must be treated as
such or the human race will not emerge favourably, if at all.
I believe that the current XCOM situation will not be sufficient
to meet this threat.
I request that XCOM be brought up to a full combat unit in order
to defeat the foe rather than merely investigate. The first step
will be construction of a new base to cover the Americas and
further expansion should it be deemed necessary by the XCOM
commander.
Also these bases be given full authorisation for any combat
situation.
The XCOM squad has proved it's greater effectiveness over
conventional forces at Novosibirsk and believe that this may be
continued into the future.

situation seems accurate. We accept that XCOM must be autonomous
of the UN committee but cannot pass freedom of engagement into one

yourself, your Military Commander and your Head of research to report to a
United Nations oversight committee on a monthly basis. The
security council backs you and funding will remain the same. Most
member states back the XCOM project but we expect them to defend
their countries in any way they can.

Plasma Beam design completed.
The Alien plasma weaponry has been developed into a ship based
weapon of our design.
From field reports we assume that this is something similar to
alien ship weapons although we won't be sure of it's
effectiveness as an air to air weapon.
The targeting systems installed on the interceptor crafts has
been upgraded to allow the plasma beam to hit the target at it's
greatest range and the beam is refocused several times to allow
a coherent beam to travel a great distance. Best of all the beam
can be powered by the aircraft's internal power plant.

Research into Alien alloys complete.
These alien materials are very light yet extremely strong. The
good news is we can replicate them easily. They can be moulded by
electro magnetic means and are easily shaped and formed. we have
designed an alloy emag furnace to produce these alloys.
It looks like they would produce very effective armour and we are
looking into ways of using it in this manner. It seems puzzling
that the aliens don't use any personal armour of this sort so
maybe we are on a wild goose chase, but then maybe it just
doesn't occur to them. At this stage we don't know.

Aliens Attack Pretoria South Africa.
14 man squad detached under command of Captain Wil Carter
In order to develop more effective tactics the commanders report
has been submitted to the research department.

Captain Wil Carter
As we landed I assigned a four man squad, commanded by
Sergeant Hudson, to move out and secure the perimeter. Sgt.
Jonlan leapt out of the ranger to the right while Squaddie Jarvis
took the left. Jonlan immediately engaged and killed two Sectoids
guarding the door and spotted a cyberdisk close by.
Jarvis killed a Sectoid and fired at the cyber disk, but missed.
Sqd. Caws and Sgt. Hudson followed Jonlan and Jarvis, Hudson to
the left and Caws to the right.
Both fired on the cyberdisk, killing it.
I ordered Sqd. Chandra out of the ranger to finish securing the
immediate area, he scouted out the area overlooking the ranger
door and killed one Sectoid across the road.
I left the 'Ranger taking up a position to the right to reinforce
Caws and Jarvis.
Hudson and Chandra advanced forward laying down suppression
fire into an occupied park while I led Caws and Jarvis through
the petrol station we'd landed by.
Sgt Jonlan, Ed Jonson and Sqd. Okamato reinforced Hudson and
Chandra to kill the Sectoid.
Hudson and Chandra split left and right to cover the main road
through the area. Hudson spotted a Sectoid and took cover while
Jonlan killed it. Chandra opened fire on a Sectoid to the right
and after a brief exchange of fire killed it.
My squad advanced through the Filling station, me at the front
of the forecourt, Jarvis scouting through the middle and Caws up
the top near the shop. Caws turned the corner at the side of the
shop and came face to face with a Sectoid, he fired two quick
shots then ran back to cover while Jarvis and I killed it from
across the station.
The team moved forward to cover a greater area. Chandra
spotted a hostile under cover of a tree and requested support to
destroy the cover. Rookie Evans fired from a block away
obliterating a tree and killing the Sectoid behind it.
I award a commendation to Rookie Maria Evans for Outstanding
Skill.
As the team was clearing the last areas a Sectoid came from a
house near the garage with a civilian held hostage, Javis
occupied it's attention while I took careful aim and killed the
Sectoid leaving the hostage unharmed, but as I turned I saw a
cyberdisk readying to fire, I yelled a warning and raised my gun
but before I could get a shot off Sqd. Caws had fired through two
walls between himself and the cyberdisk and fired, exploding the
cyberdisk and almost certainly saving my life.
I award to him a commendation for remarkable presence of mind and
skill.
The mission was a success with 11 Aliens eliminated and only 3
civilian casualties out of 15.

Personal Armour research completed.
Using the alien alloys we are able to make an effective combat armour.
With some knowledge of the alien weaponry we have produced an armoured
suit which is as easy to wear as our fibre composite armour yet affords
in excess of five times the protection. Kevlar armour would need to be
around six inches thick to match the anti ballistic and thermal
protection that this suit provides.
This armour is good, but alien weapons are better, so we have begun
research into battlefield tissue repair.
Research indicates that trauma caused by plasma wounds can be severely
minimized. Our research aim is to produce a battlefield Medical Kit to
prolong the lives of our troops.
Manufacture of 15 Personal Armour suits begun.
15th March
Medikit design finalised.
The battlefield medical unit combines an enhanced biogenic suture unit
with a painkiller and stimulant dispenser. The suture unit can provide
damaged tissue with nutrients while promoting white blood cell release
to the area. The painkiller and stimulant are of a standard medical
nature.
The unit is designed to be easily used with minimal training. The unit
uses a blood heamophyte scan to diagnose injuries and an easy to use
interface to help with treatment. It's quick and simple to use.
The most intriguing artefacts from the alien ships are the fuel sources. Further investigation must be put towards this material if we are to fully understand the nature of the ET technology.

Elerium 115 researched.
The element used to power alien spacecraft is indeed an element. The
nucleus contains 116 Protons and 174 neutrons. In it's natural state
there are 115 electrons with a shell configuration of 2,8,18,32,32,18,5.
The five shell would normally contain 9 electrons if it were full so it
has 4 free valences. Despite the intriguing outer shell and heavy
nucleus the Elerium atom does not behave as we would expect. The
electrostatic force is as strong as would be expected but the spin is
such that the inter nucleon bosons are expelled at high velocities from
the nucleus. This has the effect of minimizing the standing
electrostatic force allowing the strong nuclear force to hold the
atom together. The expelled nucleon bosons act as anti particles in
opposition to the higgs bosons and thus counteract gravity. Once the
bosons have been released the electrostatic force reasserts itself
letting the atom break down into Molybdenum and Gadolinium. It is
theoretically possible to reproduce but would require a particle
accelerator around 17 Kms long in a picogravimetric environment to produce even
a tiny amount.
We have begun research into how the aliens control the boson release in
their power supplies.
25th March
UFO power source research completed.
The dense nature of Elerium seems to keep the released Bosons in the
vicinity which prevents it's decay.
The UFO power source works by directing a huge rotating energy source
beneath the Elerium which draws out a small number of bosons. This has
the effect of creating a stream of them which can then be directed to
produce power. The energy source is reversed to halt the chain reaction.
Using similar principles we believe we can initiate a self sustaining Elerium reaction in small quantities to power an infantry armour suit. This is an exciting concept.
26th March
Power suit recovered.
Utilising the Elerium reaction which we discovered in the UFO power
source we are able to create a small scale Elerium battery. This can
take a huge charge and slowly release it. It allows the production of
much thicker armoured suits with powered actuators allowing a greater
freedom of movement. Our power suit designs more than double the
protection of the personal armour design, with the small disadvantage
that they must be recharged after each mission.
We have now begun research into advanced alien computing systems.

Skyranger Intercept with 14 troops armed with Laser Rifles.

As we left the ranger Sgt. Jonlan was fired upon. She dropped, fired off
six shots and rolled off the exit ramp.
A plasma shot came from another alien and she fell crumpled in a heap.
Jarvis and Caws Barrelled out of the ranger firing on the hostile, Caws
killed it and the two moved across to check Jonlan.
Meanwhile Hudson and I advanced on the first hostile laying down fire,
one of my shots knocked it down and we took cover under the rangers
wing.
Caws called across to me
"She's alive, just.. we'd better get home quick I don't think she's
going to last long"
As I turned to order Jarvis to get her into the ranger another hostile
rounded the building. I saw a movement in the corner of my eye and had a
shot off before I knew what was happening. It was a lucky shot which
took the little grey guys feet from under him.
Hudson took a team to the barn that the hostile had come from while
Jarvis and Caws followed me to the ship. It looked undamaged, but well
guarded. As I entered the ship, two heads turned to and two alien hands
reached for weapons. A third alien sat at a console in a corner. I
gunned down the two guards and got out of the way, Caws followed up
quickly blowing off the last creatures head before it could reach for
it's gun.

Dr. Parkinson has restricted Jonlan for 15 days while she heals.

Captain Wil Carter's report
After a standard deployment we reached the alien vessel. No visible
signs of damage.
I entered the small ship to be met by a cluster of five man sized purple
creatures. Each had a metal sphere in place of legs. I raised my heavy
plasma and fired into the cluster killing three. I then turned to fire
again, another dropped. The last creature was across the ship and threw
his gun down then charged at me, I put a shot through it's head and it
dropped.
Mission successful
5 creatures killed.

Science report (supplemental)
The alien creatures here are nothing like what we have faced before.
Their ship design was similar though.
Although the creatures were armed they made no attempt to attack until
fired upon. This may have been because they were surprised by the
attack, at this point I'm not sure. After careful consideration though
it seems likely that these new creatures are allied with the original
grey aliens which we are calling Sectoids.
These Floaters were armed with the same weaponry and flew in the same
ships. I think it was the best move to shoot first and ask questions
later.
On the subject of the Heavy Plasma weapons. The battle report coupled
with our research into Elerium has confirmed our worries. The Elerium in
the heavy plasma clips is stable, but as soon as it is triggered by a
similar method used in the power source there is no way to stop the
reaction. In fifteen hours after it is activated the clip completely
destabilises becoming useless. This means that each clip can not be
reused, if it is fired on a mission it will become useless soon after.

John Hudson has received a high number of battlefield commendations due
to his great skill with a rifle.
His reflexes and shooting skill have saved the necks of many XCOM
troops. Due to a bad injury he
has been out of action for a while so the newer recruits have yet to see
him fight.

Ed is always on the lookout for bigger and better guns. He sorely misses
his Auto cannon with explosive shells and looks forward to the day the
scientists develop a way of using an Interceptor Plasma Beam as a
personal weapon. The squad have come to love Ed, or Crazy Eddie as he's
sometimes known and most have learnt to stay well back when they see him
near grenades.

Jarvis is an all round great trooper, one of the old hands he's normally
seen right in the thick of it.
Jarvis holds the 2IC position as the highest non ranking trooper.

Rune has thus far shown himself to be a capable trooper with an eye for
the enemy. At the moment he really needs to work on his aim though.

Derek Caws seems to have a personal vendetta against all cyberdisks. He
considers it as a matter of personal pride that to date he has killed 8 of
the 11 Sectoid tanks that we have encountered. Although he's under
strict orders to stand a bit further back than usual.

Another of the original squad that tends to hang back and keep under
cover. Chandra is all too willing to fight for his planet, he'd just
rather not die for it too. A cautious but effective trooper.

King is a quiet kind of guy who doesn't seem to mesh well with the rest
of the team. He doesn't have much of a social life as far as we can
tell. But he performs his duty satisfactorily.
Squaddie Christine Blakemore

Christine is one of our two female troopers and as such receives a lot
of attention from the rest of the guys.
Most have at one time or other been at the receiving end of Sgt.
Jonlan's training and so leave her well alone. This means that Christine
generally gets a lot of drinks bought for her. She's a very capable
soldier and fulfils her duty well.
Squaddie David McCarty
Missions 3, Kills 2
McCarty is one of our newer troopers and so is not as well known a
quantity as the others. He seems a very capable trooper with a very
clear aim.
Rookie Andrew R Gillett
Missions 2, Kills 0
Andrew has yet to see much action on the battlefield so don't yet know
how well he performs. He seems to work well as part of a team and
fulfils his role adequately thus far.
Rookies Matthew Malloy and Robert Bohenberger have yet to see combat and
are currently undergoing basic instruction under Sergeant Jonlan.

Research Report
4th April
UFO Navigation discovered.
The alien ships use opto-linear processors arranged in a network fashion.
It provides a lot of processing power, especially in it's ability to
model three dimensional space and wave fronts. Another advantage is it
can be scaled up or down quite easily and retain it's core
functionality. The most profound discovery here though is data on the
targeting and control of the anti gravity waves produced by Elerium fuel
sources.
I believe we could construct anything from full blown UFO's to small
flying suits with this data.
We have begun research into UFO construction, in order to combine all
our knowledge and come up with a few workable designs following these
principles.
11th April
UFO Construction Research complete.
From detailed analysis of UFO's we have determined that the Hull is
specially designed to focus and emit the anti boson particles that
propel the ship. The power source is situated near these points. In fact
the ship can have anything from one to a hundred power sources, they can
work independently or complement each other making vast ship designs
possible.
We have begun work on a small test design which will function as a one
man fighter craft.

Sgt. Jonlan exited the ranger first and took position kneeling to the
right of the ramp.
As soon as she was in position she checked the surrounding area and
reported the following
"What the Hell!! It's a Snake.. A huge Orange snakeman thing, It's ugly,
and I'm gonna kill it!!"
Mission preceded from this point to discover three other live snake
creatures and one corpse.
Scientific Report (supplemental)
We have given these creatures a brief examination and cryogenically
stored their corpses for a later more detailed analysis. Our only choice
is to believe that these creatures are connected with the Floaters and
the Sectoids as they use the same weaponry and the same ships.

The Sectoids fought very badly here and I'm not sure why?
It's possible that these guys just aren't very good soldiers or not that
warlike but with their weapons and equipment I'm not sure that's the
case. Our Power Suits took a number of shots and may well have saved
lives, but most of these Sectoids were only armed with the rifle variant
of their Plasma Weaponry, which doesn't look to have the punch to stop
our Power Suits.

Mission Report follows.
I ordered the troops to spread out and cover the area. Sgt. Jonlan
discovered a small craft, looked like big enough for one person. At that
point Myself and Squaddie Caws came under fire, moving around a break in
the ice we spotted a large green muscular creature. Caws opened fire
hitting it twice, but the creature kept on firing. It hit me in the
chest and knocked me down, but my Power Suit protected me. As I got up
the creature had disappeared, Caws and I advanced cautiously, with
Jonlan and Okamoto looking to flank it further up. It was nowhere to be
seen. Suddenly a plasma discharged fired across the ice lake hitting
Jonlan in the head, her suit servos kept her upright and the cooling
system engaged to radiate the heat. She was uninjured. As we advanced
Caws saw the hostile and dropped to one knee firing as quick as he
could, he got off six shots, one of which grazed the creature, I ran
forward and fired off a single shot which burned the thing's head clean
off.

Excerpt from Mission Report Follows.
This ship was big... I mean biig. From our viewpoint there were five
columns, the squad advanced through a cornfield to the nearest column,
no entry point, three others were arrayed around the edges with no way
in either, we lined up close to the central column. Maria Evans was
flanking the area through a large cornfield,
Matthias Zander was on the other side investigation the base of the ship
in more detail. I went into the grav lift in the central column, and
fired up it killing two guards. As I moved the rest of my team inside I
heard shots from behind us, it was Maria Evans aiming and firing on the
team. One shot hit Squaddie Caws, but his armour protected him, the next
hit Rookie Okomato, she was less lucky, wearing only personal armour the
shot went through her leaving a large fist sized hole in her chest. The
rest of the team got inside the ship.
Zander was still on the far side, Evans refused to answer her radio
link.
I took a four man squad up to the top deck and the rest of the team
scouted the lower deck. Suddenly Evans was back online, I ordered her to
return to the Skyranger, she complied at first, then replied "God damn
it Zander cease fire, argh I'm hit... under fire, from Zander sir"
Zander refused to answer his com link either. I kept the squad moving to
get this ship cleared of hostiles and to get back home as quick as
possible when over the Com link I heard Zander yell "No more!!! Argh,
they're coming for me, get away get away!!!" Evans reported that he
threw his Plasma Weapon into the cornfield and ran for the Skyranger.
Then soon after I heard repeated firing over and over again and Evans
yelling "They won't get me here, I'll kill them, kill them all..." She
threw her empty gun away and ran for the Skyranger. My squad finished
clearing the ship of hostiles and got out of there quick.

..As we lined up near the central pillar ready for the breach Squaddie
Jane Hill screamed at clutched her head, as we turned she raised her
Plasma Gun and fired into the bunched up squad. Three shots rang out,
the first hit Rookie Rachel "Newt" Jordan and killed her, the next shot
flew on striking Squaddie Mike Jarvis, wounding him while the third hit
me, but caused me no damage, we moved quickly into the ship, while Hill
dropped her gun and ran off screaming.

The alien base was a series of grid corridors and rooms, all seemed to
focus on one point, a large chamber packed with computer hardware. This
looks to be the control room of the base. The base was well defended
with 17 troops. But the open design of the base gives our troops the
advantage here I believe. We can learn something here about our own
bases and how the design could well be improved to increase security.

Research Report
25th April
New Fighter Craft Research completed
The Firestorm One man fighter replicates the classic alien design
with a
central drive unit and saucer shape. This craft is a major
improvement
on the Interceptor designs and is superior to any earth based
technology. It requires an Elerium source as fuel unfortunately.
The
most important part or this project is the advances in vehicle
construction we have developed. Along with the fighter we have a
smaller
vehicle that was originally designed as a test bed for anti grav
propulsion.
We have developed this design and drawn up blueprints for a
Hovertank
with a Plasma based weapon system.
We have also learnt more about craft design under these
conditions and
think that an agile armed transport craft may be possible.
We have now begun research into some of the speciality alien
weapon
systems, from battlefield reports we believe our current project,
a
small launcher device is used to stun enemies, as it has been
used on
our troops a number of times. If true this could prove useful.

Combat report:
As the ranger landed I ordered a close perimeter established
around the
base of the ranger.
Rune Boersjoe sighted an Alien as he disembarked and opened fire
killing
it. He dropped to the ground and rounded the tailgate where he
sighted a
second of the Big Green Men as we have taken to calling them. He
fired
off his Heavy plasma loosing three more shots and dropped the
creature
onto the ice.
After we had established the perimeter I send three squads out.
Sgt Jonlan's squad encountered the UFO first. They formed up at
the
entrance and prepared to breach the craft. She went in first only
to
face three of the aliens looking straight at her. Wasting no time
she
fired, strafing across the group, killing two of them in three
swift
shots. The third she knocked down with a shot between the eyes as
it was
bringing it's pistol to bear.
No more aliens were discovered at this site.

The hovertank was launched and sent on a patrol of the area.
Meanwhile I
advanced my squad rapidly to the central column. Five troops were
sent
to the top deck while five dealt with the lower deck.
The hovertank was highly successful in neutralising external
threats.
My squad spread through the ship rapidly and killed all targets.
During the advance Squaddie Derek Caws was shot making the
breach.
However the power suit dissipated the most of the shot leaving him
only
banged up a bit.

Mission Report.
Recounted by Sergeant Hudson
Two civilians were killed in this attack.
First was an unfortunate man who ran between a trooper and a
snakeman,
as there were two civilians and an XCOM trooper at risk, Sergeant
Boersjoe opened fire, accidentally catching the civilian in the
crossfire. It is an unfortunate event but Sergeant Boersjoe made
the
right decision to fire.
The second civilian fell prey to a new and frightening alien
creature.
As Captain Jonson and Sergeant Boersjoe patrolled near the main
road a
civilian ran from a nearby warehouse into a park. She was
followed by a
black insectile creature which exploded from the warehouse at
great
speed, easily catching the girl it grabbed at her waist and
plunged it's
claw into her stomach.
As she writhed and squirmed it dropped her and attacked the
troops, just
as it was about to punch it's claw through Sergeant Boersjoe's
stomach a
burst of plasma tore it's head off.
Meanwhile the girl's skin turned from pink to green to grey and
her body
stretched and twisted.
Green gloop dripped from the corner of her mouth and she lurched
towards
the troopers. A hail of plasma brought her to the floor but as
she fell
a new creature burst from her skin. Jonson and Boersjoe stood
shocked in
terror as the large black creature smeared with tatters of blood
and
skin stretched itself and looked up at them, but before it could
attack
a single plasma beam sped down the street from the Colonels gun
and
thumped into the creatures chest burning a fist sized hole
straight
through it.

11th May
Small Launcher researched
This device launches the smaller purple bombs found among the
aliens.
It works by launching the shell through it with a concussion
pulse. As
it passes the muzzle it is primed to detonate on impact.
We have begun research on the bombs for this weapon.
12th May
We have completed research into the launcher bombs. They are
composed of
a phosphorus and magnesium shell containing a compressed knockout
gas.
It's armed with an electronically armable impact fuse and a
detonation
charge with an Elerium explosive core. We could make a similar
device
with earth based technology but it would be twice the size and
half as
effective.
We have tested this technology against the live muton brought in
from
site 33 and it seems effective.
We have decided on a program of further research into this
creature.
14th May
Research into Muton Creature completed
We have completed our interrogation and examination of the
captured
creature.
This humanoid creature is physically very powerful and seems
intelligent. After analyses of eating habits and nutrient needs
we have
determined that this creature feeds on raw flesh of any kind.
They seem to rely on commands from a race they call Ethereals. As
we
were unsure of whether this was a race we had met or not we asked
the
creature for a description or picture. The creature drew us a
full size
picture using a stick of chalk we provided and it is certain that
we
have not yet met these creatures. The Muton appears to have all
the
mental attributes of a good soldier and is physically very
strong,
traits which are accented by various cybernetic devices implanted
through the body, however this seems to be the limit of it's
abilities.
The creature had no abstract mathematical knowledge or large
scale
strategic ability, it regularly lost at the games at chess we
played
against it, but rarely lost when we challenged it to connect
four,
although these activities seemed to confuse the creature it
understood
the principle of a game.
It seems clear that these creatures are foot soldiers for a
commanding
race, this one in particular is a navigator aboard one of the
alien
craft, but it has shown us how to interpret rank of other
creatures. It's
commands seem to be received via an implant in the frontal
cortex. It
survived the removal of all other implants but the loss of this
one
seemed to break apart the mental structure and killed the
creature. It
is logical to assume that it has been engineered to rely on
commands
from these Ethereals while still maintaining some individual
thought and
without them it dies.
Besides knowledge of the creature we learnt about some of the
missions
performed by the extra terrestrials. We were told about
harvests
conducted by the aliens. Alien craft abduct animals from the
earth and
remove certain organs. This activity occurs mainly in farmland.
It's
possible that alien races originally seeded the earth with life
and is
now returning to reap the harvest they've sown.
The greatest prize of all is data concerning the communications
network
of the alien force. Up to this point we have been unable to
detect any
electromagnetic emissions from alien craft. We have discovered
that
aliens use a different mode of communications known as
hyperwaves. We
have begun research into a way to read these transmissions.

The research indicates a nearby alien base of operations within
our
solar system. Aliens indicate this place to be the centre of an
ancient
civilisation which pre dates human history. We must locate this
place
quickly but the troops we interrogated did not know the location.
We
suggest interrogating a leader to find the location.
We have established a number of projects to research the alien
creatures
in order to get as much data as possible. We have split one group
of
scientists into five groups of ten each. The Hyperwave decoder
project
is still in progress.

We believe this attack was staged to lure XCOM forces to the
area.
The ranger was surrounded by huge alien forces , there were 12
floaters
and two Large fury creatures arrayed around the landing ramp of
the
ranger as we landed. The hovertank floated out first drawing a
lot of
fire and sustaining heavy damage but it remained intact. The rest
of the
troops followed quickly and rapidly cleaned up the remaining
forces. The
hovertank moved south sighting another floater which was quickly
exterminated. The last hostile was found unconscious holding a
stun
launcher, presumably having gone berserk as their plan failed.
